Where dat bump at?

I'm just going to lead off with this image, as I'm pretty sure this is what a lot of people are thinking when they look at me right now.

On Friday I hit 18 weeks, and so far reactions have been mixed.  On the one hand, one of my...ahem...rounder friends at work good-naturedly yelled at me last week because I wasn't really showing yet (quote: "I look more pregnant than you do!").  Yet only two days later, a colleague quietly asked M if we were expecting.  Now, to be fair, we were out for drinks and I was nursing a water whilst wearing a very blousy top that had always given me a bit of preggo look even before the advent of Chalupa Batman, but still.  I figure the reason she asked him instead of me was because she was a little concerned that I'd been hitting the donuts too hard and didn't want to offend me just in case.  Either that, or she was aware of this helpful infographic:

Right now, I figure I'm sitting somewhere around level 2 or 3 of this chart.  See for yourselves.

Baby?  Or pizza?

I have to admit, it's a little weird to be almost halfway (!?!) through this pregnancy without really being able to see or feel anything.  This stage of pregnancy is such a tease!  Over the past week or two I've occasionally felt little rumbles that could maybe sorta kinda be CB moving around in there, but my stupid anterior placenta makes it so faint that I can't really be sure.

Also, while my regular pants and belly band are getting pushed pretty close to the limit, I still don't seem to be quite ready for maternity clothes yet.  Especially tops.  Every time I've tried one on, even if I grab a really small size I still look like I'm wearing a potato sack because I'm not filling them out properly.  (Side rant: is it just me, or do they make maternity tops really huge at the neck??  Everything I've tried on seems like it gapes down to my boobs, which I'm sure is great for nursing but not so good for going to work and otherwise associating with humans who don't suck on your breasts regularly.  Or perhaps, as a member of the itty bitty titty committee, I'm just not filling them out properly.)

I'm also still waiting for the fabled "nesting instinct" to start kicking in, because I know the next 20 weeks will pass by in a flash, especially with Christmas holidays thrown in there.  We've done exactly zero preparation so far, which I guess is probably pretty normal, but at some point we'll have to buckle down and focus on turning "that room" (which has held junk for the past three years of our infertility process) into a nursery.  So far though, my couch has had a whole lot more appeal than the paint aisle of Home Depot.

  1. I love that you call him/her Chalupa Batman! And your teeny tiny bump is adorable. Just keep wearing those flowy tops. I bought very few maternity tops, instead opting for empire waists and sweater dresses (although, by that stage of my pregnancy, they no longer fit even remotely like a dress).

  2. You look amazing. I didn't start really showing until 16 weeks, but I was hefty before. I'm 22 weeks tomorrow and there's no denying the pregnancy.. But I do deny the belly rubs. You'll pop soon!

  3. looking good! I prefer the tight, stretchy maternity tops to the loose baggy ones, personally. More flattering. Don't wait too long to try out the maternity pants - soooo much more comfortable than regular pants. It's awkward when people start to notice - or not - and ask. Just part of the fun though! 18 weeks is a good time to start the planning pieces that shouldn't be put off, i.e. registering for classes, hiring a doula if you want to go that route, etc. Other things can be put off for a while. hope you keep enjoying the experience!

  4. My sister in law is due next Friday. Last Saturday we were all together at a funeral, and one of my parent's friend asked her who was watching the baby. I think he was joking because she is very much pregnant....but I could see she was annoyed/confused by his question. Ummm...who's watching the baby? Her uterus is watching it. Weirdo.

I think you look great and wonderful. And I very much love the nickname for your fetus.

  7. Well I can only imagine what tease this all is, and I'm amazed at the female bod, how we all show at different rates and in such different ways. You'll probably get to be pretty cute your whole pregnancy, if you're still not showing much now, so that's a postiive! Instead of what is my case, which is, honestly, that I've reached giantess stage, and my calves, oh my lord, they've gained so much weight they look like thighs. Mm, decidedly not cute.

Funny story: In high school, my boyfriend and I used to play cards a lot with his sister. I remember playing cards in the living room with her---she was wearing just a regular sweatsuit, and she was lying on her belly, feet up in the air, as we played cards. The next day, she called her family from the hospital to tearily admit that she'd just given birth. No one had been aware of her pregnancy (but her). Not showing at all at full term---it was so crazy! And her baby was healthy and normal weight.

No maternity clothes yet....once you go there, you won't go back. (: I kind of wish I could wear maternity clothes for the rest of my life....I always think of that Comic Book Guy character on the Simpsons who thanks Marge for letting him borrow her maternity pants and says "I've never been so comfortable in my life!"

  8. You look great! My friend in Maryland posted pics of herself at 10 weeks, and all I could think was, "that's a food baby. that's not a bumb, that's your lunch!"

  10. You look great!! The inbetween weeks are difficult because people can't really tell but who cares what others think!

Maternity clothes are THE BEST. Seriously. I miss the pants every day.

  11. I hope it was the water drinking that prompted the question of if you are expecting. Granted, I don't know what you looked like pre-chalupa, but if I saw you in public I would not assume you are pregnant (nor would I say you are fat or had too many burritos). I bet you are pretty close to popping. Until then, you look great! You've still got time for the nursery. I didn't start mine until I was close to 30 weeks and at that point you'll have a harder time moving around so you can get everyone else to do the work for you. I didn't have to paint anything or put any furniture together. It's brilliant.

  13. Um...your "bump" above is what I look like in my normal life if I'm not consciously sucking in my belly. My current bump is bigger than yours and I'm only 15 weeks. But I'm only 5 feet tall and the space between the bottom of my boobs and my crotch is only like 12 inches. There's no where for anything to go except out! It's funny though that the people I've told keep commenting on how cute my bump is, and no one at work knows yet and they haven't noticed. And yup...our "nursery" is still full of junk. Someday I'll clean it out. Maybe after a nap.

  15. I agree with the others, I think you look fantastic!!!! I didn't really feel the babies until well past 20 weeks. So exciting that you are half way through your pregnancy already!
